The Alanson Cross Country Team's Story
In the spring of 2013 Alanson teacher Beth Ristow with her love for running voluntarily began the K-8 running program Stride for Pride. (This past spring was proudly Alanson's third year for the Stride with Pride running program.) This program peaked the interest of another Alanson teacher, Hayley Cheshire. Together Beth and Hayley and their love for running began to devise a plan to bring the opportunity of cross country running back to the Alanson High School, which had not had a cross country team in approximately 10 years.
In the fall of 2013 both Beth and Hayley with the approval of the administration volunteered to co-coach a cross country team. The team first comprised of four high school runners and grew to six. Without funding the team wore track jerseys and wore them proudly.
In the spring of 2014 many high school students showed interest in possibly running cross country the following fall. Therefore, Beth and Hayley decided to organize a 5K Run/Walk during Alanson's 2014 Riverfest in order to fund raise for the cross country team. The fundraising 5K was a great success.
The 2014 & 2015 Alanson Schools' Cross Country Team grew and each wore new uniforms due to the many walkers/runners and those who donated during the 2014 & 2015 5K Riverfest Run/Walk. One of the runners, Alex Wiese earned a place to run at States both in 2014 & 2015!
This upcoming years' Cross Country Team is guaranteed to be comprised of even more runners. Hopefully this years 5K Riverfest Run/Walk will help us uniform all our runners and also help finance invitational runs and other team needs.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
Sincerely,
The Alanson Cross Country Team
